Biodiversity

Successive State of the Environment reports show Australian biodiversity is in rapid decline. Sadly, Australia leads the world on extinction, with the highest number of mammals declared extinct since European settlement. Australia is one of seven countries responsible for more than half the globe’s biodiversity loss.

The federal government is not taking its legal obligations seriously – under Australia’s international commitments or our national environmental protection laws. As an active member of the Places You Love alliance Environmental Justice Australia is building the foundations for a next generation of national environmental laws. We were instrumental in the Australian Panel of Experts on Environmental Law’s blueprint.

Environmental Justice Australia also works at state level for stronger laws to protect biodiversity. We have been actively involved in the reform of Victoria’s main biodiversity protection law, the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act.
