Our new workshop helps communities involved in environmental impact assessment processes for proposed major new mining and quarrying projects.
Environmental Justice Australia has been funded under the Community Education Grant Program of the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources to deliver community legal education to communities involved in environmental impact assessment processes for proposed major new mining and quarrying projects covered by the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.
The relevant assessment processes concern the environment effects statement (EES) processes for the proposed Kalbar Resources mineral sands mine in East Gippsland and for the proposed Bunyip North Quarry, and the assessment process for the Big Hill gold mine in Stawell.
Please note: we are a non-profit community legal organisation that is independent of Government and mining interests. Our role under the grant program is to:
- increase community understanding of the assessment processes and their relationship to the regulation of mining and quarrying under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990; and
- help to ensure that potentially affected and interested community members are able to effectively and constructively participate in the EES and Big Hill assessment processes to make their views known, particularly those who would otherwise be unable or unlikely to participate.
Where are we going?
The next education session concerns the EES process for the proposed Bunyip North Quarry, and will assist in structuring submissions. The session will be held in Pakenham, on Monday 7 August, 12–3pm.
