Select Documents on International Affairs was published by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It generally contained the texts of multilateral treaties and conventions drawn up at conferences in which Australia participated during a particular year, but which did not enter into force for Australia during that year or which had not otherwise been published in the Australian Treaty Series (eg amendments to certain existing treaties).

Select Documents appeared irregularly at first and contained few treaty texts. Numbering of issues began in 1963. In 1966 the Australian Government accepted a recommendation of the Joint Select Committee on Parliamentary and Government Publications that treaties be published in the series prior to their ratification by Australia (Hansard, House of Representatives, 25 August 1966, p. 414). Treaties thus appeared in No. 10 (1966), then in 12 (1967), 14 (1968), 15 (1969), 17 (1970), 19 (1971), 21 (1972), and then in all subsequent issues. No. 44. will mostly contain 1996 texts. The texts are listed chronologically below.

If a treaty appearing in Select Documents entered into force for Australia at a later date and was published in the Australian Treaty Series, the text would thereafter be found in the latter series.
