Courts and the legal system
Our laws come from the Commonwealth Government and the Victorian Government.
The courts:
- decide what these laws mean
- use the laws to resolve disputes between people
- sentence people who break laws.
The courts in Victoria are the:
- Magistrates' Court
- County Court
- Supreme Court
- Children's Court
- Coroners Court
- Neighbourhood Justice Centre.
The Commonwealth courts are the:
As well as the courts, there are tribunals. Tribunals are less formal than courts and are usually a quicker and cheaper way of resolving disputes. Often people involved in a case at a tribunal will be able to represent themselves.
