The department and its agencies work to protect and uphold the rights of all Victorians, inform and educate Victorians about their rights and responsibilities, and provide advocacy services.

Rights and responsibilities include the right to keep personal information private and the responsibility of ensuring a workplace is free of discrimination and harassment. Areas of legislation include freedom of information, privacy, human rights, equal opportunity, and consumer law.

Advocacy services aim to protect the rights of all Victorians and include specialist services to address specific community needs.  

Within the department's portfolio, organisations working to ensure compliance with the law  and protection of Victorians' rights include Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Office of the Victorian Privacy Commissioner and Office of the Public Advocate.
