"[Beer] relies on nature to provide the products... Poison the well and you poison the product." - Sven Foerster, German beer maker

Anti-fracking groups have found a new ally in their fight against fracking - the German beer industry. Beer... makers across Europe's leading country are voicing their concern that fracking will contaminate the clean water they need to make their beloved national beverage.

German beer makers have already successfully pressured their government to put a ban on fracking until 2021, but they are worried that recent upheavals in Russia - Germany's largest source of natural gas - will put pressure on the country's leaders to allow domestic fracking.

NO THANKS: By now, you've probably seen countless videos of people - from Oprah to your next door neighbor - doing Ice Bucket Challenge. We're glad it's raised so much money for ALS ("Lou Gehrig's Disease") research, but since Earthjustice ...is based here in San Francisco, we're going to take a pass at dumping buckets of precious, fresh water on our heads in the middle of one of California's worse droughts. http://ejus.tc/1sb46Bw

Our advice: just donate money to ALS research (or your favorite charity) and spare the water for native plants

BEE EMERGENCY! The California Legislature is voting today on a horrible bill that would postpone any action by the state’s Dept. of Pesticide Regulation to ban bee-killing pesticides until 2020! That’s 6 MORE YEARS of inaction while bees ar...e dying off at record numbers. We need you to call your State Senators right now and ask them to vote NO on the bee-killing bill, AB 1789. Here's where you can find your State Senator and their contact info: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

Scientists believe neonictinoid pesticides are a major reason for bee die-offs, but AB 1789 would kick any decision-making down the road until 2020. Since bees provide 1 in 3 bites of food, that’s a disaster for both bees AND people that we can’t afford.

TWENTY-FOUR THOUSAND - That's the number of "secret" chemicals out there approved for use in the US that we have absolutely no clue what they are for, what health risks they have, not even their names! And for that, you have to thank the wo...efully out-of-date law known as the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). http://ejus.tc/1rSTZ4A

Full of loopholes that protect company profits rather than people, TSCA fosters secrecy, not safety, in the chemical industry. Here's an example of just how absurd the law is: When the EPA tried to ban all uses of cancer-causing asbestos, the courts struck it down because TSCA requires the "least burdensome" approach for industry. Since Montana has a very controversial history with wolf "management" (read: wolf kills), remember to ask Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department to:

1. Ensure that stamp proceeds are to be used only for non-lethal wolf conservation efforts
2. Change the name of the proposed stamp from "Wolf Management Stamp" to "Wolf Conservation Stamp."

INSPIRING: Hundreds of thousands of Americans have stood up for the men, women, and children who grow and harvest our food by asking EPA to strengthen laws protecting farmworkers and their families from hazardous pesticides. http://ejus.tc/...1n63BWm

Farmworkers are some of the hardest working, yet underpaid people in America, and they are exposed to extremely dangerous chemicals every day. The Worker Protection Standard (WPS) is the only federal standard designed to protect the country's 2 million farmworkers from toxic pesticides, but it desperately needs strengthening. INVESTIGATIONS: EPA is investigating charges made by residents of the predominantly black and low-income community of Uniontown, Alabama that their civil rights were violated when Alabama allowed four million cubic yards of poisonous coal a...sh to be dumped near their homes. http://ejus.tc/1kOFEqY

The coal ash came from a massive spill that contaminated the predominantly white, middle class town of Kingston, Tennessee. After Kingston residents complained in 2010 about the lack of cleanup, authorities moved all the poisonous coal ash across state lines to Uniontown, Alabama where it's now essentially treated as "household waste" with little oversight.

CELEBRATING ALL HONEY BEES! Did you know that 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat is pollinated by bees? That's why we are doing everything we can to protect their survival – including a lawsuit to stop the use of neonics – a highly toxic... pesticide – that is one of the main culprits behind colony collapse disorder. Also, a friendly reminder to all the amazing gardeners out there: Many of the plants you buy at Home Depot and Lowe's may be treated with bee-killing neonictinoids. In the fight to protect the health of our planet and of our communities, we all need sweet moments of inspiration to refuel and rejuvenate us. http://ow.ly/AmRIw

A gargantuan schooling of anchovies in the bay has attracted a spectacle of ...feasting humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and birds in Monterey Bay, California. Visible from shore, the whales are leaping out of the water as they rocket through the anchovies with open mouths, breaching, tail-slapping, fin-waving.

This miraculous display doesn’t mean all is well with our oceans, of course. Too often, we find that we even have to fight hard to protect the very laws we need for defending species; such as the Magnuson-Stevens Act, currently under reauthorization in Congress, and the Endangered Species Act— also threatened by a package of bills proposed in Congress by oil and gas drillers. http://ow.ly/AmRIw

Yet, this amazing sight of humpback whales really gives us hope of what a healthy, restored ocean ecosystem might look like.

Each year, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week concludes its program with a familiar saying: “Sharks have more reason to fear us than we have to fear them.” And nowadays, this has never rung more true. Sharks are being brutally slaughtered for t...heir fins by the millions, and at this rate sharks soon will be functionally extinct.

In fact, tens of millions of sharks are mercilessly killed each year. More than 160 species of sharks are categorized as at risk of extinction, ranging from near threatened to critically endangered. But what's the biggest threat to these elegant creatures? Shark finning.
The butchery takes place at sea where fishermen haul sharks aboard to saw off their fins and then dump the still-living creatures back into the ocean. The finless sharks writhe to the ocean floor, where they die of suffocation or are eaten by other predators.

Some countries are beginning to take action to stop shark finning, but it's not enough. Join Earthjustice as an ocean ambassador to help us protect the magnificent creatures that create such a unique and complex ecosystem: http://earthjustice.org/the-wild/oceans

SIGN TO SAVE ALASKA’S BRISTOL BAY: Home to abundant wildlife and world-class salmon runs, Bristol Bay is being threatened by mining companies that want to extract Pebble ore deposits. The EPA recently proposed restrictions that would limit... development of the Pebble ore deposit; however the proposal isn’t finalized yet! http://ow.ly/AfjxN

If approved, the Pebble Mine would be the largest, most destructive open-pit mine ever built in North America. Over its lifetime, the mine could generate 23 billion tons of dangerous mining waste, wiping out over 90 miles of salmon streams!

The EPA's proposed restrictions would effectively prohibit such large-scale destruction, but The Pebble Limited Partnership, which owns the mining rights, has filed a lawsuit asking the court to halt the EPA's public process immediately.

Together, we have been fighting for decades to protect Alaskan wilderness, and we stand ready to fight once again.

In Port Arthur Texas, home to 8 oil and chemical industrial sites, the egg-like, putrid smell of toxic chemicals spews from oil refinery smokestacks every hour of every day. That stench stands as a reminder to the people who live there that... what they smell and breathe is, indeed, making them sick.

Each year, the nation's nearly 150 oil refineries operating in 32 states emit thousands of tons of hazardous air pollutants, including substances that cause cancer.

JUSTICE AT LAST: The racially divided town of Rochelle, Georgia has finally announced a settlement with black residents to fix its old, leaky sewer system that repeatedly discharges raw sewage into the black side of town. http://earthjustic...e.org/blog/2014-august/clean-victory-for-a-georgia-community

While white residents on the south side have enjoyed updated sewage pipes, Rochelle officials had repeatedly ignored requests from black residents to fix sewage pipes on the north side of town. It took a lawsuit from eight black residents represented by Earthjustice to finally get them to act (in fact, when our attorneys first showed up to investigate the problem, we were threatened by the sheriff and told to leave town...)
