Should Gina be allowed to purchase offsets for environmental damage caused by her coal mines? We don't think so. "The first impulse of developers is to buy their way out of things and offsets allow them to do this."

A transparent process? Or an invisible one? Coal Seam Gas consultation process in Victoria seems to have passed many residents by. "Sessions run in Gippsland were not well promoted and many locals...were unaware that these meetings took place." said Peter Wonfor of Inverloch.
The Progressive Law Network conference is coming up on 5 September. Lawyer Brendan Sydes, our CEO, will be a panel guest, speaking on the topic of ‘where to from here’ for environmental protection?
Letters to the editor in the Age today about Alcoa's operations in Anglesea: "Anglesea was named as a national air pollution hotspot in the recent major Environmental Justice Australia report ''Clearing the Air'' due to the mine's sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions."

Interesting point of view in this piece on federal environmental protections, by Cairns academic Allan Dale. We don't agree that local and state authorities always make better environmental decisions than federal ones. What do you think?
We're almost at 4,500 likes - can you help us get there? If you know anyone who believes in environmental justice for all Australians, invite them to like our page too.
East West link: "The East West Link tunnel battle has moved “underground” with claims historic titles give people ownership of their land to the centre of the earth – right in the path of the tunnel, according to legal experts.

Land titles pre-dating 1891 cover the ownership of sites from ground level to the planet’s core."

Bushfire management: Comrie review recommends (again) that Victoria move to a risk based approach for prescribed burning, rather than a “numeric area based target”. See page 47.

More than 3,000 Australians die each year from the effects of air pollution. Health and environment groups, including Environmental Justice Australia, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Doctors for the Environment Australia and the Nature Co...nservation Council of NSW will come together with experts and community representatives in Melbourne over the next few days, to demand immediate action to protect the air we breathe.

Whales - including a mother and calf - are at risk from underwater drilling for Victoria's Western Port expansion. We've written to Environment Minister Greg Hunt on behalf of the Preserve Western Port Action Group. "We are concerned that the Port of Hastings Development Authority is disregarding its legal obligations." said our lawyer Ariane Wilkinson.

"DUST contamination, dangers presented by an open-cut pit and legal options for concerned residents were just three issues discussed at a community meeting in Heathcote last night." Our lawyer Ariane Wilkinson advised people of their legal rights:
Excellent piece by our Director of Advocacy, Nicola Rivers, on the flawed process for approving Melbourne's controversial East West link.

"I’d like to say that Victorians are being ‘railroaded’ into this controversial project, but that seems like an unfortunate description for a process designed to avoid questions about public transport..."
Threatened Species Commissioner announced - but what powers does the role really have?

“A radical new approach is needed to save our most vulnerable species yet the threatened species commissioner will have no real power,” said Brendan Sy...des, chief executive of Environmental Justice Australia.

“Greg Hunt has confirmed that the commissioner won’t be able to do anything more than encourage co-operation between states. It’s difficult to see how the commissioner will affect any meaningful results.”
