Today marks one hundred years since the start of World War One...the Australian War Memorial has paid tribute to the men and women who served in this war....
Today marks 100 years since the declaration of the First World War. This is a momentous occasion, as the First World War touched the lives of nearly every Australian. With a population of less than five million in 1914, over 415,000 men enl...isted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.

The outbreak of war was greeted in Australia, as in many other places, with great enthusiasm. But for Australia, the First World War remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties.

From today until 11 November 2018, we will commemorate the centenary of the First World War, the scars it left and the pride we felt when we emerged from the other side. The events that took place 100 years ago meant a lot to us then and mean a lot for our future.

Today we remember all those men and women who served their country in the First World War, those who were left to keep Australia running and the families whose loved ones never returned.
